Nervous System Physiology

Virtually every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body is controlled and regulated by your nervous system. And while the chemical and electrical nature of this vast network is best left to specialists, here are four key things you should know:

When the neurological circuits have integrity, your body works as it was designed.

When spinal vertebrae pinch or choke nerves, affected organs and tissues don’t work the way they should and ill-health results.

Efferent Communications:

Nerve impulses are sent from the brain out to the organs and tissues of your body.

Afferent Communications:

Nerve impulses are sent back to the brain to make sure everything is working correctly.

Compressive Lesions:

If spinal vertebrae pinch or choke nerve tissue, signals going from or to the affected organ or tissue can be diminished. (i.e. constipation.)

Facilitative Lesions:

If spinal vertebrae chafe or irritate nerve tissue, signals going from or to the affected organ or tissue can be excited. (i.e.,diarrhea.)

The nervous system is vulnerable where delicate nerve tissue comes into proximity with the moving bones of your spine.

That’s why we're interested in your spine!

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a long established system of diagnosing and treating the structure and function of the human body. It involves the treatment of medical disorders through manipulation and massage of the skeleton and muscles.

Osteopaths use many diagnostic tools and procedures used in conventional medical assessment and diagnosis. The training of Osteopaths involves a 5 year degree programme and is now regulated by the General Osteopathic Council ( GOsC ). All major private health insurance companies now recognise Osteopathy as a well established mainstream medicine.

Osteopathy is a safe, gentle and effective method of pain relief suitable for people of all ages. Many new born babies receive Cranial Osteopathic treatment following difficult births which can help symptoms of poor sleep habits, infantile colic, poor feeding and irritability.

Osteopaths are well equipped to treat low back pain, sciatica, slipped discs, whiplash symptoms and trapped nerves as well as joint pain, arthritis, headaches and muscular strains.

Your first visit to an Osteopath will involve a detailed case history being taken. This is followed by a physical examination of your muscles and joints and for this it is usual to undress to your underwear. On completion of the examination a diagnosis of your condition is offered and a course of treatment will be prescribed. If acceptable the treatment will then commence.

Doctors of Chiropractic (DC): Registered with the General Chiropractic Council UK.

  • Aches and pains are signs that your body isn’t working correctly.

  • Your brain, spinal cord and all your nerves control how your body works.

  • Physical, chemical or emotional stresses produce a defensive posture.

  • Muscles contract, locking spinal joints that pinch or irritate nearby nerves.

  • Lack of nervous system integrity sets the stage for disease and ill health.

  • A thorough examination helps chiropractors find these vertebral subluxations.

  • Applying a precise force to stuck spinal joints helps the body correct itself.

  • Health usually returns as repeated visits restore nervous system integrity.

  • That’s why chiropractic care has helped millions get well and stay well.

Acupuncture British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) and British Medical Acupuncture Society.

Acupuncture can effectively treat conditions that do not respond well to western medicine. Back pain suffers use acupuncture for pain relief including sciatica and trapped nerves.

Acupuncture treatment involves treating the whole person and not just the presenting symptoms. Symptoms and signs are used by the skilled acupuncturist to diagnose and treat the cause of the condition.

Acupuncture was in use in China before the pyramids were built. The foundation of its wisdom was built on the basis of simple natural laws that govern our health and natural well being.

The theory of acupuncture treatment lies in the balancing of individuals life force energy or Qi ( chee) which flows through a network of channels called meridians that cover the body.

The skilled acupuncture practitioner can determine through subtle pulse measurement, tongue diagnosis and an examination of the patient, where the imbalances lie. By inserting very fine, tiny needles into special points on the meridians the acupuncturist can alter the energy flow, which in turn helps harmonise the body.

Physiotherapy

Our HPC registered physiotherapists can treat you for sports injuries or back pain on private health insurance or private payment plans. You do not need a referral from your GP to access treatment from us. Our physiotherapists prefer a “hands on” approach and also use electrotherapy.

Our physiotherapists specialise in back pain, stiff neck, sciatica, whiplash, trapped nerves, slipped discs, frozen shoulder, knee pain, muscle strains, sprained ligaments, tennis elbow and sports injuries and are all registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC)

Physiotherapy is the study or practice of the therapeutic use of physical methods or agents such as remedial exercises, massage or electrotherapy. Physiotherapy is the treatment of injury by correcting and improving the natural healing processes of the body. This can be achieved in many ways, but having an awareness that the human body will always attempt to heal itself, the physiotherapist can assist this process.
